VRChat has been wanting to add their age verification update for a while now with heavy requests to do so. Here, I’m going to sum up the most important parts from the video!
Firstly, they were talking about why they want to add age verification.
VRChat isn’t like most other games where the social aspect comes second or can be used to help with the gameplay. The point of VRChat is to socialize and explore. Adults tend to want to hangout with other adults and it would help knowing they are at least 18+ if not their age. This would also include needing to trust the other person.
Next, they were talking about what age verification is going to look like inside VRChat. They are partnering with Persona which is a third party company that also works with Roblox and Reddit to name a few. You aren’t going to be required to age verify, it won’t prevent you from playing the game but if you are 18+ and don’t verify, you won’t be able to get into 18+ instances. You will also need a valid government ID to verify with. VRChat will be getting none of your information and none will be stored in their database besides your birthdate and only your birthdate.
If you do choose to verify, you will get the option to have a badge on your user profile. You do not have to show the verification, you can choose age verified or age verified 18+, you are not required to have the badge on your profile.
Due to the cost of the third party verification, they will only be putting it out to different groups at a time. Not everyone will get it all at once. They will be expanding depending on user feedback.
To do so, they’re partnering with a few event organizers to run trails for age verified events. Only members of those groups will be able to apply for age verification and only these groups will be able to restrict access to instances to those who are age verified. Age verification won’t impact content filters but they are considering it and will most likely implement it later on.
Their goal is to make VRChat a safer place for all ages!
Persona is not available world wide including Europe. People are hoping they also add eID to verify those that persona cannot.
based one a few comments from the video players seems worried about letting a third party company keep their personal information and there is currently no statement regarding how long these images and information will be kept before deletion.
